What you Need to Know Before Hiring a Minot Newborn Photographer

If you’re a new parent, you’re probably overwhelmed with all the decisions you need to make. Booking a newborn photographer doesn’t have to be one of them. Let me guide you through the process and provide you with all the information you need to capture the early moments of your baby’s life.

Newborn photography is so important because the first few months go by so fast. There was such a difference between my daughter at a few days old and at two months old. When I had my daughter, getting her photos done wasn’t even on my radar and I was surprised when a newborn photographer for the hospital stopped by to offer their services. My husband and mom both encouraged me to get the photos taken. Unfortunately, at the time, it was 2022 and everyone was still cautious about Covid. Due to this, I would have to bring my own blankets and items for them to photograph since they couldn’t bring in props others had used. I didn’t want this, so when we left the hospital to go home, I was on a quick search for a photographer and didn’t get her photos done until 3 weeks old.

I’m so glad I got these photos done, even though I had to print them myself and they didn’t turn out the best. And I say this because I love to look and see how tiny she used to be. My daughter also loves to look at her pictures and point and say, “Baby.” or “Baby Willow.” So, for my family, it was 100% worth it and have and will become family heirlooms to be able to pass down.

So now, let’s dive into some of the most common questions about newborn photography!

“What should I look for when hiring a newborn photographer?”

It’s important to pick a photographer who specializes in newborn photography and has experience working with babies. Although I am newer, I have a few years (two years in March 2025) of experience working with newborns and their families. I’m dedicated to providing a comfortable, safe, and enjoyable experience for you and your little one. I do this by doing workshops each year in order to keep up with how to best keep a newborn safe while posing. I understand the importance of capturing these early moments, and I take pride in creating, beautiful images and memories that you’ll cherish through years to come, as well as having tangible items that can be passed down through the generations.

“What can I expect during a newborn photography session?”

During a Minot newborn photography session, I’ll work to create a comfortable and safe environment for your little one and go over what’s going to happen when you arrive. I also encourage my clients to include themselves and siblings. If you have any specific props or poses in mind, I’m always glad to incorporate your ideas into the session.

During a session, I tend to start with your classic newborn poses, followed by wrapped with props, and then ending with family images. However, if there are siblings, or your little one is wide awake and just won’t sleep, I do start with wrapping them and start family photos first. This way, the siblings can leave as soon as this portion is done so we can keep the studio nice and quiet for your baby to keep settled. It also helps keep baby safe in case older siblings like to run around and won’t sit still. I also wrap your little one if they are wide awake because it reminds them of the womb and helps keep them calm and comfortable.

“When should I schedule a newborn photography session?”

To capture the best innocence, details, and sleepy moments, I recommend as early as possible. Ideally, this would be within the first two to three weeks of your new little’s life. I have, however, done newborn images up to three months old (see image below), but it is a bit harder with their startle reflex and being more aware of their surroundings. I recommend doing your Minot newborn photography session as soon as possible during your pregnancy to ensure availability, but most people schedule up to two months in advance due to spots being very limited.

“What do I need to bring?”

You don’t need much for your session as I provide most items, including props, backdrops, and wraps. However, I do suggest bringing items such as pacifiers, bottles (if formula fed), diapers, and wipes. I also encourage you to bring a few personal items if you want them in the photos, such as an important blanket or toy (optional).

“When do I get my images?”

So, this is actually a part of my process. About two weeks after the session, we meet up and have an ordering appointment where you pick your images, whether it be in wall art form, as an album, or something different. After that I take 2-3 days to do final edits since I don’t edit all the images for the ordering appointment. It can take up to 4-6 weeks for your wall art to come in. When they arrive at my studio, I will let you know, and we can make arrangements for me to deliver your images to you.

“How much does newborn photography cost?”

It is different for everyone. My clients, however, tend to spend anywhere from $500 to $1,000+, depending on what products they order. I know this is a huge investment, but keep in mind that newborn photography is a specialized service that requires a lot of time, effort, and equipment. However, I’m dedicated to providing high-quality prints and products that you’ll cherish for a lifetime that can be passed down through the generations.

So that’s pretty much all there is to it! Newborn photography is a wonderful way to capture the early moments, innocence, and details of your new baby. I do my best to take care of all the details, so all you have to do is show up! And don’t forget the baby!
